LEARN HOW TO INSTALL FEDORA 36 WORKSTATION EDITION ON VMWARE ESXi 6.0 IN 513 SECONDS!

Fedora Linux is a Linux distribution developed by the Fedora Project which is sponsored primarily by Red Hat with additional support and sponsors from other companies and organizations. It is a great and stable linux based operating system that comes with a clean user interface and out of the box apps that allow you to complete basic tasks such as document and spreadsheet processing right after installation. If you work as a software developer then you will love using FEDORA even as a virtual machine as it comes with many easy to install apps and tools that enhance your software development productivity. Fedora Workstation is a reliable, user-friendly, and powerful operating system for your laptop or desktop computer. It supports a wide range of developers, from hobbyists and students to professionals in corporate environments. Fedora also allows you to containerize your own applications or deploy containerized applications out of the box with built-in Open Container Initiative (OCI) image support. In this short video tutorial you will learn how to install FEDORA 36 WORKSTATION EDITION on VMWARE ESXi 6.0 or on any newer version of ESXi. We’l walk you through the process of downloading FEDORA 36, creating a FEDORA REDHAT virtual machine in ESXi and also installing the FEDORA 36 operating system on the virtual machine.

REQUIREMENTS

In order to complete this tutorial, the following is a list of items that may be needed or required. Please ensure to have these items available before taking implementation action on this tutorial to ensure success.
1) A desktop or laptop with atleast 4GB RAM, a dual core processor and 50GB of free disk space
2) A web browser i.e internet explorer, firefox, google chrome, safari etc
3) A server running VMware ESXi 6.0 or any newer version of ESXi
4) The FEDORA 36 work station edition disk image file (ISO FILE)
5) The VMware remote console app, vmware workstation or vmware fusion for accessing the virtual machine console.

OVERVIEW

1) Go to the FEDORA website and download the FEDORA 36 workstation edition ISO file
2) Open a web browser and log into the VMWARE ESXi web console 
3) Upload the FEDORA 36 ISO file to the ESXi server datastore
4) Create a new RED HAT FEDORA virtual machine and attach the FEDORA 36 ISO file to the virtual machine
5) Start the virtual machine, connect to its console using VMWARE REMOTE CONSOLE or any other VMWARE product that can access an ESXi VM console, install FEDORA 36 and install FEDORA 36 updates.

STEP 1: GO TO THE FEDORA WEBSITE AND DOWNLOAD THE FEDORA 36 WORKSTATION EDITION DISK IMAGE FILE (ISO FILE)

1) Click HERE to got to the FEDORA website or go to getfedora.org.  Click on the DOWNLOAD NOW button on the FEDORA WORKSTATION EDITION section and click on the DOWNLOAD button on the x86_64 section.

STEP 2: OPEN A WEB BROWSER AND LOG INTO THE VMWARE ESXi WEB CONSOLE

2) Once the download process is complete, open a new web browser tab and type in the IP address or URL of your ESXi server. Click on the OPEN HOST CLIENT link and type in your username and password on the login page. Click on the LOGIN button to access the ESXi web based console.

STEP 3: UPLOAD THE FEDORA 36 ISO FILE TO THE ESXi SERVER DATASTORE

3) Next, click on the STORAGE TAB and click on DATASTORE BROWSER. Choose a folder that you would like to upload the FEDORA ISO FILE to and click on the UPLOAD BUTTON. (if you have not created any folders in your datastore click on the CREATE DIRECTORY button to create a folder) Browse to the location where the FEDORA ISO file is located on your computer and click on OPEN. You should now see a file upload progress bar. Wait for the upload process to complete before you move to the next step.

STEP 4: CREATE A NEW RED HAT FEDORA VIRTUAL MACHINE AND ATTACH THE FEDORA 36 ISO FILE TO THE VIRTUAL MACHINE

4) To create the FEDORA virtual machine, click on VIRTUAL MACHINES and click on CREATE / REGISTER VIRTUAL MACHINE. On the SELECT CREATION TYPE window, select the CREATE A NEW VIRTUAL MACHINE option and click on NEXT.

5) On the SELECT A NAME AND GUEST OS window, type in a descriptive name to identify the virtual machine, set the COMPATIBILITY option to ESXi 6.0 VIRTUAL MACHINE and the GUEST OS FAMILY to LINUX. Set the GUEST OS VERSION to REDHAT FEDORA (64 BIT) and click on NEXT.

6) On the SELECT STORAGE window, you need to choose a DATASTORE to save virtual machine files. If your ESXi server only has 1 DATASTORE, it will be selected automatically and all you need to do is to click on NEXT.

7) On the CUSTOMIZE SETINGS window, set the number of CPU’s to allocate to the virtual machine to 4, set the amount of memory to allocate to 4GB and set the size of the virtual hard disk to 100GB or higher. Expand the HARD DISK and ensure that the THIN PROVISIONED option is selected and SCROLL down to the CD / DVD section

8) On the CD / DVD DRIVE drop down, select the DATASTORE ISO FILE option, browse to the location of the FEDORA ISO FILE in the DATASTORE browser, select the FEDORA ISO file and click on the SELECT button. Click on NEXT to proceed to the next section.

9) On the READY TO COMPLETE window, you will see a complete review of the virtual machine that you are about to create, check the parameters listed here and if there are any changes you would like to make, click on the BACK button to browse back to previous sections however if there are no changes to be made , click on the FINISH button to complete the virtual machine creation process

STEP 5: START THE VIRTUAL MACHINE, CONNECT TO ITS CONSOLE USING THE VMWARE REMOTE CONSOLE OR ANY OTHER VMWARE PRODUCT THAT CAN ACCESS AN ESXi VM CONSOLE, INSTALL FEDORA 36 AND INSTALL FEDORA 36 UPDATES.

10) To start the virtual machine, click on the name of the FEDORA VM and click on the POWER ON button. Click on the CONSOLE BUTTON and click on LAUNCH REMOTE CONSOLE.

11) If your ESXi server uses a self signed certificate, a popup message will be displayed notifying you that the IDENTITY of your ESXi server cannot be verified. Click on the CONTINUE button to proceed with the connection. 

12) Once you have connected to the FEDORA VIRTUAL MACHINE, use your keyboard arrow keys to select the START FEDORA WORKSTATION LIVE option and press ENTER

13) Once the first time boot up process is complete, click on the INSTALL TO HARD DRIVE button to kick start the operating system installation process

14) On the WELCOME TO FEDORA 36 window, select your LANGUAGE and click on CONTINUE

15) Below the SYSTEM title, click on the INSTALL DESTINATION button to select the hard disk you would like to install FEDORA 36 to. Click on the VIRTUAL HARD DISK listed and click on DONE

16) Click on the BEGIN INSTALLATION button and the FEDORA 36 installer will start decompressing critical operating system files, install operating system packages, tools , utilities and configure the FEDORA 36 boot loader onto the virtual hard disk.

17) Click on the FINISH INSTALLATION button and click on the POWER icon and click on POWER OFF / LOG OFF > RESTART

18) On the WELCOME TO FEDORA 36 window, click on the START SETUP button and on the PRIVACY window click on NEXT.

19) Click on the ENABLE THIRD PARTY REPOSITORIES button and click on NEXT. 

20) You can connect your online accounts to your FEDORA VM on the ADD ONLINE ACCOUNTS window, however if you would like to do this setup later click on the SKIP button.  On the ABOUT YOU section type in your FULL NAME and USERNAME and click on NEXT. Type in a password that you will use  to log into the FEDORA 36 virtual machine, click on NEXT and click on START USING FEDORA LINUX

21) To install system and package updates in FEDORA, Open the terminal application and run the following command:

sudo yum update && yum upgrade
